Honey Bee Swarms

What is a Swarm?

Honey bees have two ways of reproducing:
- a Queen laying eggs or the whole Family splitting in two
- Swarming is the second kind!

When a colony becomes too large or too strong to remain in just one hive, about half of them will get organized and leave together to find a new home. Honey bees that swarm have fat little bellies full of honey for the trip, and no home to protect, so they are almost always very gentle.

However, it requires a skilled beekeeper to remove them safely!

What do I do with a swarm?

DO: call a beekeeper, who will be delighted to come collect it!
DON'T: spray with pesticides: this will make them (understandably) angry and defensive, and will harm one of humanity's greatest helpers.

Most swarm catches are free, however donations are greatly appreciated for our apiaries.

In what areas will you remove swarms?

We are based in Southern Maryland and the Metro Washington DC area, and will respond to most swarm removal requests within the Eastern Beltway area.
