Honey Bee Removals

Sometimes bee colonies settle down in places they don't belong, and Billy can help!

CUTOUTS: How Billy removes honeybees that have set up shop

Cutouts occur when a swarm of honey bees has left their home hive and then moved into a location within a building. Often, this can be within the siding of a house, a chimney, an exterior wall, or even ceilings between floors. Billy has experience in removing honey bee colonies from a wide variety of locations within buildings.

He also has infrared cameras and other tools to accurately identify where a honey bee nest may be located, its approximate size, and the easiest way to access and safely remove them.

DO: watch for bees that show up inside, check the exterior of your home for bees entering and leaving
DON'T: Use sprays or pesticides! This will not destroy the colony, though it will make remaining bees more likely to sting. In addition, dead bees left in the wall, as well as contaminated honey and wax, can break down and damage your home.

COST: honey bee removals through a cutout require an estimate, as each job is different based on its location, the length of time the bees have been present, and the size of the colony. Please collect as much information as you can, contact us, and schedule an appointment for a face to face assessment and estimate. The estimate will be based on the approximate length of time and tools required.

How do you remove honeybees from structures?

First, it is necessary to locate and open up the cavity where the bees have set up their colony. Using his FLIR camera, Billy can more accurately and humanely locate and plan the removal of the colony. After opening the wall, he often uses his specially made Bee Vac to gently pull the honey bees out.

All removals are done in the afternoons, planning to finish at sunset: the bees send foragers out during daylight hours, and his goal is to remove all the bees once they are back from the field.

What happens after you remove them?

Billy takes the bees to one of his apiaries. Local honey bees that are strong enough to swarm and to set up colonies on their own have strong, healthy genes that he can preserve and help spread into local honey bee stocks, creating stronger bees for all!

He places rescued colonies into their new hive with any comb saved from the removal. Any honey removed will also be fed back into the hive unless the colony was sprayed with pesticides before being rescued.

What areas do we do swarm removals and cutouts?

We are based in Southern Maryland and the Metro Washington DC area, and will respond to most swarm removal requests within the Eastern Beltway area.
